Before the weather gets unbearably hot (as we know it will in the TX summer) get outside with your toddler or preschooler and go on a fun family picnic! While the idea of having small children in wide open spaces may sound too exhausting, you can eliminate some of the stress with good planning. Anytime you leave the house with your kiddos, a great rule of thumb is to keep the outing as simple as possible. Cramming too many activities into one afternoon can lead to grumpy children and an exhausted mom.

    1. Location, Location, Location – When deciding where to picnic start by doing it at a familiar place. You could even start in your own backyard or at a friend’s house. Being familiar with your surroundings will give you peace of mind to be able to enjoy yourself. Once your kids are older or whenever you are more comfortable, venture out to a local park or zoo for your picnic festivities.

    2. Bring a Friend – Children almost always do better when they have friends to play with. Even introverted children appreciate the company of another child to play with outside. Being outside is the perfect place to spark imagination so having a friend explore with your child makes it even more fun! Plus, having another adult to watch the kiddos means you will have a chance to talk to a grown-up and have another set of eyes looking out for your child as you look after theirs.

An Easter Egg Hunt can be a fun event for the whole family, but did you know it can also be an educational opportunity for your child? Here are six creative ways your child can learn through an egg hunt:

    1.Toddlers Can Learn Colors

Before letting your toddler loose to find as many plastic eggs as possible, tell your toddler only to collect a specific color or colors of eggs. This will help your toddler distinguish between different colors and make the game more challenging!

    2.Toddlers Can Learn Shapes

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, fill plastic eggs with different shaped objects. After the eggs are all found, reward your child for naming each of the shapes found in his or her eggs.

    3.Preschoolers Can Learn Numbers

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, use a permanent marker to number the plastic eggs before hiding them. Challenge your children to find the eggs in order from 1 to 20, or 1 to 100 if you’re that ambitious!

For the rest of the ways your child can learn through an egg hunt, read the full article here: What Your Child Can Learn From An Easter Egg Hunt

Is your child’s back talking becoming a problem? Are you tired of hearing “No! You do it!” from your toddler or preschooler? There may be something you can do to help curb those annoying, whiny, temper tantrums.

Instead of responding by saying “You’ll do it because I said so” or “Don’t ever talk to me like that!” there are other ways to help your child learn to disagree with you respectfully. The best way to stop back talk is to provide your child with some independence – but within your own limits. Kids of all ages need a sense of personal power to make their own choices and express their differences in opinions with parents. When parents make all the decisions for them, children naturally want to lash out, and so they do — with words and sometimes, physical aggression.

So how can parents teach their children to disagree respectfully? Read the full article here: How to Stop Back Talking Without "Because I Said So"

    Arts & Crafts

Whether you’re indoors on a rainy day or enjoying the sunshine outdoors, arts and crafts projects never fail when it comes to little ones. Find an array of DIY crafts for kids online at website’s such as Pinterest, Care.com and personal blogs. Some of our favorites include squirt gun painting and adorable baking soda sea art!

    Stay Active

It’s easy for kids to fall into the slump of staying indoors all summer playing video games or watching television. Encourage your kids to go outside by taking them on hikes, kayaking trips or even just strolls around the neighborhood, it’s important to lead by example. Motivate your kids to stay active by integrating activities that they like to do. For example if your child loves riding their bike then plan a group bike ride and picnic in a scenic area.

    Experiment in the Kitchen

Cure boredom by turning your kitchen into your own cooking show! Let your little one pick out a recipe and help them customize it to be their very own. Not only does this help children understand what they like and dislike, it also gets their hands messy and free from the television remote for a couple hours.

No one can fully prepare you for when you have to return to work after having your baby. This is because everyone responds differently on an emotional level. Some moms will be overwhelmed with the task while others might feel guilty about being eager to return to their old lives. Here are several ways that you can prep yourself for this transition.

    Rest Up

Set a goal to be in bed by 9 p.m. in the final weeks of your maternity leave. One of the biggest complaints that working moms have is that they are exhausted. By insuring that you’re putting your sleep as a priority you will be allowing yourself to avoid any emotional or physical breakdowns.

    Practice Makes Perfect

When possible arrange for your childcare to start a week before you return to work. This will allow you to practice your new daily routine and ease yourself into the emotional discomfort of being separated from your infant.

    Maintain your Support System

Don’t hesitate to learn on your friends and family for emotional support throughout the first several months of this transition. Try to aim for regular weekend get-togethers with friends or join a “mom and baby” class to meet other moms who might be going through the same situation.

    Find the Right Child Care

As a mom it’s up to you where you feel comfortable leaving your infant during work hours. If possible it’s recommended to research your options while pregnant so that you can make an educated decision.

Many child care centers do offer infant programs that will offer a range of development programs for your baby. Be sure to check out the facility and meet with staff to see if that particular center is right for your infant.

The end of your maternity leave might be one of the most emotional transitions for new mothers. The first couple months might not be the easiest but they are crucial to getting into the routine of your new life with baby.

During the school holidays, it is normal for children to get bored and frustrated and you may find them watching TV to stay entertained. If you need help in thinking of some fun activities for your children, then read here for some ideas.

Have your kids create their own placemat

Get some large pieces of cardboard and have your child paint, draw, glue and more to create a beautiful artwork of her own. Help her write her name on it and then take it to a local stationery or printing shop to have it laminated. She will be able to use her creativity and have something she created herself. This is perfect for pre-k aged kids.

    Animal masks

Something that your preschooler will like to make is an animal mask. Get some paper plates and help your child draw a face on the plate. You can help her draw the basic facial features in a black marker (such as eyes, nose, mouth and whiskers for a cat) and have her color in the rest. You can even cut out ears at the top. Then just cut out holes for the eyes and add some elastic and you have a completed mask.

    Fingerprint Tree

Anything you can create that preserves your child’s prints is a great activity and always adored by parents. Take a piece of paper and draw or print a tree on it. Dab some paint on a paper plate and allow your child to paint the leaves on the tree with her fingers. When the painting is dry you can write your child’s name and date on it as a keepsake.
